EV_CALC

What is this and why does it exist?

The App

You probably know how much you pay for a kilowatt hour of electricity or a litre of petrol. You might know how much it will cost to fill your car up. But, it's harder to work out how far that will take you, and that's probably the most useful and interesting thing to know.

EV_CALC is a tool to help you work out how much it will cost you to run an electric vehicle and to be able to compare it to the cost of running a petrol or diesel vehicle. Electricity charging prices vary wildly depending on your tariff, when you charge, and public charger prices are much more expensive. This calculator lets you plug in real numbers and see what you'd actually pay per mile.

The EV Cost page focuses purely on electric vehicle running costs — cost per mile at different electricity prices, the cost of a full charge, and estimated range.

The Petrol Compare page puts EV and petrol side by side so you can see how the running costs stack up at current fuel and electricity prices. Or, you can use data from your own car and your experience of driving.

The data

Both pages include a vehicle lookup that pulls real efficiency data for specific makes and models. This data comes from:

So you don't have to guess the numbers if you don't currently drive an ev. We haven't got all the figures for all the latest models, so you might have to pick a comparable model.

About Me

I created EV Calc because I was thinking of buying an electric car and after seeing the cost of public charging, I was wondering if an electric car was really going to be cheaper to run, like I'd assumed. Petrol prices were always changing, mostly going up and I was frustrated that I couldn't compare electric to petrol as all the numbers were different. It felt like the real important numbers were being hidden and I wanted to easily see them.

My name is Richard, you can find out more about me on my personal website. I'm a software developer. For my day job I work for a skiing company and in my spare time I try to work on my own ideas, like this calculator.
